The FCHV program of the Lumbini Eye Insitute program trains women village volunteers to screen for eye disase. Early detection of conditions such as glaucoma or trachoma will identify the need for sight-saving treatment which can be provided free or at very low cost by the Eye Institute. Awareness teaching of eye conditions and eye care is also given by them. 'Dr Basant' was one of the founders of this hugely successful program which is also sponsored by Rose Charities New Zealand.
